It’s said that women pick fellas who look like their fathers, but a new study suggests that ladies choose men who have some sort of resemblance to their brothers.

Researchers at Northumbria University asked 32 volunteers to share photos of their romantic partner and brother. Another group of volunteers were handed a piece of paper that had the photo of a woman’s brother in one column and four men in the other—one of them was the woman’s significant other and the other three were randomly selected. They were then asked who the man on the first column resembled the most in the second column.

You probably know where this is going: Researchers found “clear evidence for perceptual similarity in facial photographs of a woman’s partner and her brother.” They found that women tended to choose the photo of the lover as being the most similar to the brother by about 27 percent.

“[Our findings] were not a rule or true of every woman but we do find that, at levels greater than chance, partners did show some subtle resemblance to the women's brothers,” lead researcher Dr. Tamsin Saxton told The Independent in an interview.

He further explains that ladies are more likely to seek out men who look similar to them because “familiarity seems to be attractive."
