5. Wax. Because out-of-bed look became the coolest hairstyle, gels have been sidelined. In place of a clean look, men suddenly wanted hair that looked effortlessly messed up and cool. Which is actually a contradication, we realized; such look actually needs effort to perfect.
Hence, wax. It is thicker and stickier than a pomade and achieves a light to medium hold which is good for those with thick hair who likes control and shine. Wax is best for styling a spike.
6. Gum. The difference between wax and gum is that gum is fibrous and is not shiny. It creates styles without looking like you applied any product at all.
7. Clays/pastes. This achieves an ultra strong hold with flexibility but is not reworkable. In simpler terms, when you wear a hat and decide to take it off, your hair will go back to its styled form. The hair can be moved around to create texture without the shine. Clay and paste are best for thick, unruly hair.
The key to all these products is to use them sparingly. A little goes a long way indeed.
