5. Put together a first-aid kit. The Philippine National Red Cross recommends that a first-aid kit should contain the following:
• Alcohol
• Betadine solution
• Cotton balls
• Sterilized gauze
• Sterilized dressings
• Bandages
• Triangular sling
• Band-aid
• Forceps
• Scissor
• Splint
• Mefenamic acid

6. Know what you can eat in the wild. Albert Sindlinger, author of The Common Sense Survival Guide, lists a few foodstuffs that you can scrape up outdoors:
a. Nuts, leach in water to remove any bitter taste.
b. Tree bark (the inner layer especially), if boiled, roasted, or chewed.
c. Bamboo seeds, shoots, and roots are edible.
d. Seaweed is edible if fresh and firm; don't touch decaying seaweed.

7. Trapped? Let them know you're still alive. Don't shout. Shouting can expend valuable air and introduce lethal amounts of dust into your mouth. Intead, tap on a pipe or a wall, or use a whistle if you have one.

8. When you can't get to fresh water, purify the water you have. "Unsafe drinking water has been the most frequent cause of food-borne and water-borne diseases, such as diarrhea and cholera," explains Charina A. Javier, RUMD, of the Philippine Department of Science and Technology's Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI). "Water must be boiled for at least 10 minutes, especially if the water source is not from approved public water systems."
