Sleep right, right now

Sleep is a luxury we can’t afford in this day and age, so says the rising number of the sleep-deprived population. Proof is the average sleep time for metro-dwellers pegged at around 6-7 hours. It's not that bad if you compare it to the ideal shut-eye of 8 hours.

Sleep right, right nowBut with mounting workloads in the office and the Internet or late night TV keeping many of us glued up late, it’s all natural for sleep time to decrease.

Of course sleep experts strongly disagree. In contrast to popular belief, proper sleep is a luxury we can’t afford to lose.

Sure, sleeping less than ideal hours have its supposed pros. In this ultra-competitive times, those who wish to succeed are expected to clock in more time, which means sleep less.

Witness: Napoleon and Thomas Edison, both great men, are know to get on with just 4-5 hours of sleep a day.

Still, not all of us can be conquerors of nations or inventors of lightbulbs. According to sleep scientists, only 10 percent of adults are capable of being efficient with less then 7-8 hours of sleep per day.

What’s worse, we’re fastly growing into denizens of zombieland without us being aware of it. A University of Pennsylvania study found that two weeks of sleeping 6 hours a night leads to the poor performance in alertness and memory tests akin to not sleeping for a day.

The catch: the study participants who slept 6 hours a day for 2 weeks didn’t feel sleepy while they were taking the tests. You already know the reasons why doctors (and your loved ones) push you to sleep the whole 8 hours: better energy levels, slower aging process, stronger protection from colds and infection, better memory processing, and appetite control.
