On December 1, Multiply as we first knew it will come to an end.
Nope, it will not shut down. It will still be there, albeit donning an entirely different form from what it had in 2004, the year it was launched. When D-Day arrives, Multiply will exist solely as an eCommerce site, a platform for buying and selling stuff online, not as the photo and video-sharing and blog site many of us have used and grown to love. The site's CEO, Stefan Magdalinski s,pilled the beans himself. Here's a portion of the official announcement:
From December 1st, we will unfortunately no longer be able to support Multiply in its current form – notably we will be removing the social networking and content sharing part of Multiply (photos, videos, blogs, social messaging, etc.). We have decided to discontinue providing and hosting these services, as we have concluded that other Internet sites who are committed to social networking services will do a better job serving you than we can.
It's almost like admitting defeat to Facebook, no? To be fair, Multiply's not the first popular site to shed its social-networking skin in response to increasing competition. Friendster, another industry pioneer, did the same thing and is now aimed at becoming the top social-gaming platform of Southeast Asia. eCommerce will be the main priority and we believe Multiply can do well as it has gradually become an online marketplace, especially for Pinoys. Fact is,many local entreps have recently found online success through Multiply. Here's another part of the announcement highlighting the transition:
I am aware of how disruptive this news may be, and understand the disappointment that it may cause. Ultimately this was a business decision, critical to our to success moving forward. Instead, we are excited to pursue our own mission to give the 350 million consumers in Indonesia and the Philippines a great way to buy and sell items online. Our singular focus now is for Multiply to retain its status as a vibrant e-commerce destination in Southeast Asia in the years ahead.
