Who knew that racking your brain for symptoms of tongue warts disease would be something that many people would call entertainment? Four years ago, Murphyâs Irish Pub held their first quiz night, jumpstarting this love for trivia in Manila. They set aside Tuesday nights to quiz their patrons about everything Google-able and offered free rounds of tequila shots to winners. Recently, several other bars have caught on, sending Battle of the Brains alums to quiz heaven.
We sampled quiz nights from four different bars in the metro. Check out where you can make use of those trivia bits filed in the deep recesses of your brain.
Murphyâs Irish Pub
Citiland Condo lll bldg., 105 Rufino cor. Esteban Sts., Legaspi Village, Makati City
Tel. 894 1884
Quiz night Tuesdays, 8 PM
Who comes here: Seventy percent Pinoy, 30 percent expats. Itâs a mix of yuppies, their bosses, a sprinkling of trivia-smitten teens, and once, the US Ambassador.
Why you should swing by: Four different types of Irish beer on the menu, plus some German and Belgian beers. And great food, tooâtry the Gambas.
How theyâre quizzed: A video screen displays the questions, while quiz master Brian Inglis reads them out loud. Teams receive answer sheets which they submit after each of the 10 rounds. Questions range anywhere between geography and local films.
Prizes: A free round of tequila shots for the winning team of each category, and for the nightâs kulelat. The over-all winning team gets a voucher worth P2,000 for dinner. If you catch quizzer Brianâs eye, you also get a round of drinks whether or not youâre winning.
What to expect: Murphyâs spells cozy. The quiz bee area is brightly lit, usually packed. Thereâs none of that boisterous shouting out of answers at Murphyâs. Order rules here, peppered by the quiz masterâs dry humor. Book a table days before quiz night and confirm on the day itself. Vacant tables are hard to come by at Murphyâs.
What you should do to get those free shots: Just go to have fun. And, like the other nightâs winners, be sure to join the team whose members include former champions of â80s TVâs Battle of the Brains and Student Canteen's I.Q. 7 .
121 Bar and Restaurant
2/F Alegro Center, 2284 Pasong Tamo Ext., Makati City
Tel. 892 8301
Quiz night Tuesdays, 9:30 PM
Who comes here: Trivia mongers in their 20s and 30s mostly.
Why you should swing by: Affordable booze and food. Hello, liempo, pork chops, and sisig drowned by bottles of less-than-P50 beer. Says quiz master Brian Banta, âAt the end of the day, weâre still a bar.â Dinner sets you back P200 to P300.
How theyâre quizzed: Itâs instant gratification at 121. Instead of answer sheets, teams use whiteboard placards which they raise at quizzer Brianâs go signal. Brian announces the correct answer. There are eight rounds of questions, with eight to 12 questions in each round. Their questions can go down to as specific as a pixel. We mean, witness a sample category: Old names of new streets or new names of old streets. Thereâs seen a Transformers category, too, which may be easier given its relevance and um, Megan Fox, but not less specific.
Prizes: P1,000 worth of gift certificates. Runners-up get bottles of booze from the bar.
What to expect: The energy level at 121 is high enough on the fun level, and gets higher when the participants have already had two or three bottles in them. The quiz takes a hilarious turn, when intoxicated contestants insist, in the movie round, that Dolphy played Robert Redfordâs lover in The Way We Were.
What you should do to get that GC: âBring friends who complement you,â says quizzer Brian. You may go with an all-doctor group and ace those disease questions, but bomb in the music round. Have a well-rounded team around you.
