High-tech Survival: 7 Gadgets to Weather The Storm

1. The humble flashlight

Everyone knows what this is, and it's available almost everywhere. The type with the built-in dynamo (hand crank) or a magnetic "shake" shaft (pictured above) would work best.

2. Mini LED torch

Essentially a flashlight but the LED torch is lighter and less power-hungry. This is great for waving around at night in the hopes that rescuers would spot you in the dark.

3. Portable AM/FM radio

We've mentioned just  how useful an AM radio is during calamities and it's the perfect time to get one. Like the flashlight, if you could spot one with a dynamo, that would be just peachy. Information can do a lot to calm your nerves especially if you know that help is on the way.

4. AA batteries + adaptors

Batteries have an average shelf life of about five to seven years so don't be afraid to put a lot on stock. AAs are the most ubiquitous so it's best to stick with them. If your radio or flashlight needs C- or D-cells, score a few pairs of battery adaptors (pictured above). These are basically plastic housings that make AAs work with bigger devices.

5. Instant cellphone charger

Mobile phones are only useful when they have power so during blackouts and emergencies, charge your phone using an instant cellphone charger. All you need to do is slap in a pair of AAs, and it will charge your phone just like your wall-socket charger. Use it sparingly, though. Save your dry cells for more important things.

6. Solar chargers

If the sun rises and there's still no help in sight, a solar charger will come in handy. You essentially have unlimited electricity at your disposal. Make sure they're pre-charged so bake them under the sun periodically.

7. Swiss knife/multi-tool

You'll never know if you need to break through obstacles or rescue trapped neighbors. These go for about P100 in Divisoria, and they're mighty useful even for everyday use.
