The return of blazers, plaids, and denim button-downs has paved the way for the reemergence of a classic fashion style: layering.

With this comeback, though, comes confusion. It's too easy to overdo it, and too easy to go for a pairing that just looks wrong.

So, before you jump on the layering bandwagon, know that there are some style guidelines you need to follow. Here are nine of them...

1)   KEEP THINGS UNBUTTONED

It's what the trend is all about—letting the world know that you've got a cool second piece in there. Keep it on display!

2)   WEARING THE RIGHT SIZE IS CRITICAL

The inner shirt shouldn't be longer than the outer shirt. Likewise, their lengths shouldn't be so far apart, if you want to be safe about it. Don't wear an oversized outer layer, too, because that will make you look like you've draped bed sheets all over yourself.

3)   EACH LAYER SHOULD WORK AS A STANDALONE PIECE

The weather is wildly inconsistent in our country. Make sure you'll be able to remove the outer layer without compromising style.

4)   AVOID MONOCHROMATIC LAYERING

Look for contrast. Don't wear a blue tee under a blue denim button-down. Keep in mind that one color should be your star and the other is just a supporting character.

5)   PLAIN TEES MAKE THE BEST UNDERSHIRTS

White. Black. Gray. These make the best undershirts. But don't stick to those colors alone. Fatigue, maroon, and light blue are equally great. As long as it's plain, it's easy to match.

6)   MAXIMIZE THE VERSATILITY OF DENIM

A denim jacket is a great layering option. It works both for a casual look as well as dressing down a formal look.

7)   KEEP YOUR BOTTOM LIGHT

Ditch those jeans when you're already wearing denim up top. Instead wear khakis or joggers—or anything that's of a different fabric.

8)   MINIMIZE  ACCESSORIES

If you're a fan of watches, necklaces, bracelets, and all that bling, well, that's alright. But don't wear them all at once! Limit the accessories because the layered look is busy as it is. Otherwise, you'll look like a walking clothing store.

9)   GO WITH WHAT MAKES YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE

Here's the most important general style rule: Get a feel of things. If you don't feel confident about your choices of layering, then there must be something wrong.
