While there really isn’t a proven direct relation between dandruff and hair fall, the two can affect each other. Watch. [firstpara] Dandruff, or Pityriasis capitis, is the excessive flaking of skin cells in the scalp. It makes the scalp, among other things, itchy. Now, when there's an itch, of course you scratch. Enter hair fall.
Scratching your head causes damage to the cuticle cells on the hair surface. Damaged hair becomes prone to breaking. The more hair breakage you have, the less hair you’ll have on your head.
Besides, Dandruff—and the itching that comes along with it—makes hair more brittle, less shiny, and even thinner. So thinner hair, breaking hair, dandruff—not a pretty combination. At all. How to
What causes dandruff?
Dandruff is mainly caused by Mallazesia globosa, a fungus that’s just floating in the air. Which means that anyone is susceptible to it. Another cause is over-activity in your sebaceous glands—that layer of skin that secretes oil—which may then be caused by a myriad of things, chief of them is stress.
Too much sugar and fat, too much sunlight, bad hygiene, and genes are other causes of the ugly D.
What can you do?
First, keep your hygiene in check. Wash your hair properly and rinse thoroughly. Make sure no shampoo residue left in your hair.
You can stop scratching your head, too. Sure the itch is just begging to be scratched but just like yo’ momma said, scratching will only aggravate it.
Use anti-dandruff shampoo and conditioner. They are specially formulated to help you eliminate those white flakes. Some are even specially formulated to reduce irritation and itching, helping stop the itch.
Head and Shoulders for Men Hair Retain contains zinc pyrithione, which reduces growth of Malassezia globosa. This, in turn helps keep your sebacious glands in check, which will keep dandruff at bay. Besides, Head and Shoulders For Men Hair Retain is specially designed for men's hair.
