Like firecrackers, round fruits and polka dot shirts, the New Year would be incomplete without resolutions. But instead of the usual I’ll- be-good or, I’ll-stop-calling-my-ex-girlfriend-in-themiddle- of-the night-to-beg-her-to-take- me-back promises, have you ever thought about changing your skin care routine for the New Year? “Why bother? I’m not Derek Ramsay” you might say. Well, aside from your face, your skin— and its apparent lack of “shine”—best represents who you are. You wouldn’t
want to be known as “Kid Kalyo” your whole life, right? The following are essential skin-saving tips…

SAY NO TO OIL-BASED HAIR PRODUCTS LIKE WAX AND GELS
Why: This is especially true for acneprone men. These products, while
providing sexy texture and shine to your strands, clog your pores and cause acne breakouts. If pimples congregate near your hairline, switch to water-based hair products, or opt for a hairstyle that doesn’t require too much time on the mirror—i.e., “The Baby Ama” look.

DO NOT DRY SHAVE
Why: You’re in a hurry and you need to clean up your facial hair pronto! What do you do? Go at it straight with a razor and mow away. But this causes razor bumps, nicks, cuts and also ingrown hairs. A better and safer way is to wet the beard area and use a shaving cream or gel. This lubricates the skin and the hair strands to protect your skin from nicks and cuts.

ALWAYS PROTECT YOUR SKIN FROM THE SUN
Why: Tanning, if you ask us, is not that manly. But if you really need to go under the sun, use a sunblock with at least SPF 30. If you don’t like the white residue that most cream formulas leave on the skin, use a gel formula. Pat on skin 30 minutes prior to sun exposure and re-apply every two hours. You need at least 1/4 teaspoon to cover your face and to ensure maximum benefits from the sunblock. It’s either that or you suffer the wrath of being called “Nognog”.

QUIT SMOKING
Why: We know it’s easier said than done. But the fact is smoking kills. It also decreases your chance at being flawless— not that it’s the ultimate goal, we reckon a notch below flawless is enough. Smoking, to be exact, causes vasoconstriction (narrowing) of blood vessels, decreasing blood circulation to your skin, thus depriving it of oxygen and nutrients. This will eventually lead to premature aging, producing wrinkles, dry skin and a sallow, grayish complexion.

USE MILD CLEANSERS
Why:  A general rule when buying soap: If you’re not sure what to use on your skin, do not try whitening soaps or facial scrubs without fi rst consulting a dermatologist. These can cause more problems and exacerbate existing skin conditions. Going the gentle route protects your skin more and lessens the risk of adverse reactions. Cleansers don’t have to sting for them to clean.
