Do you change your shampoo every month? Do you avoid plucking white hairs because you're afraid two more will sprout in its place? Do you think you understand what’s happening up top? We guess not!

There are so many old wives' tales about hair which may have ironically affected your hair care routine in an adverse manner. Today we free you from the chains of locks-related mythology so you can start taking better care of it.


MYTH #1: CHANGE YOUR SHAMPOO EVERY MONTH OR ELSE IT WILL STOP WORKING

Truth: Hair can’t tell the difference between brands. Your favorite shampoo will work the same week after week and month after month. The real danger? Shampooing too frequently. Doing so strips away your hair of natural oils and leaves it dry and fried. Give your hair a shampoo-rest at least twice a week.

MYTH #2: IF YOU PLUCK YOUR WHITE HAIR, MORE WILL GROW

Truth: As Sex And The City once said (yes, WE SAW Sex And The City), "Three more will come out of its funeral." According to the University of Arkansas For Medical Sciences, it's absolutely not true. We also found out that plucking white hair the wrong way can damage the roots, which can result to your scarred follicle not growing new hair. 


MYTH #3: HAIR WAX/GEL CAN CAUSE BALDNESS

Truth: Baldness can be hereditary but it's never the wax or gel’s fault. But let us remind you that these hair products have chemical ingredients that can cause dryness and damage. And dry scalp can sometimes lead to hair loss.

MYTH #4: HAIR LOSS IS INHERITED FROM MOTHERS

Truth: Study suggests that somewhere between 79- to 81-percent of baldness is determined by genes. Older studies point out that the baldness gene comes from the X chromosome, a.k.a. our mom. Yet newer studies have debunked it, and have since said that the hair loss gene could come from dad as easily as it could come from mom. So, you can now stop saying "Nay, kasalanan mo kung bakit ako kalbo eh!"


MYTH #5: YOU CAN TRAIN YOUR HAIR TO DO SOMETHING

Truth: It's pretty funny that a lot of younger guys believe that combing and styling can train hair to grow differently. No amount of "training" can change your hair's pattern. It may temporarily look different but it's impossible to make it stay that way forever. Look at women. Though they iron their hair straight and curl every day, it still goes back to the way it really is. You can never change the type of hair you were born with, apart from synthetic measures of styling.

MYTH #6: SLATHER MAYONNAISE ON HAIR TO DEEP CONDITION

Truth: The belief is that slathering mayo can help restore the locks' pH balance, thanks to the condiment's protein and oil components. While it's true that mayo has these components, it's not meant for your scalp—lest you're trying to invite ants and roaches to stay there. Try a moisturizing mask or cream instead.


MYTH #7: TIGHT HATS CAN CAUSE HAIR LOSS

Truth: Like all other beliefs, this too is a lie. Well, sort of. If you're going to wear a hat a couple of times a week, that's not going to do real damage. But try wearing a cap—one that's too small for your head—every day, even while you sleep. That's going to put too much pressure on your hair follicle, and you'll likely suffer from traction alopecia or gradual hair loss. The same goes for people who wear tight ponytails and braids.

MYTH #8: DANDRUFF IS CAUSED BY DRY SCALP

Truth: Dry scalp has nothing to do with it. Actual dandruff is caused by a fungus called malassezia, which can sometimes grow out of control and begin feeding on the oil on your scalp. It can be cured with an antibacterial drug called sulfonamides.


There you go, you gullible hair-lovers. Also, here's a bonus fact for those keen on bulking up their guns some more: It has been scientifically proven that taking steroids can cause baldness. You’ve been warned, muscle man!
