Pinoys take their carbs very, very seriously—it's come to the point where we can't even imagine a life without unli-rice (exhibit A, exhibit B). If we can't have rice, though, we'd be fine settling for a sandwich: they meet our carbs (bread) + ulam (palaman) requirement just as fine, with the added bonus of utensils being strictly optional. If you're craving for a sandwich right now (because we know we are), here's where you should take your caveman appetite:
1) Bun Appetit’s Lobster Roll (P595)
Available on weekdays at The Pantree (119 Deal Rosa St., Legazpi Village, Makati City) and on Saturdays at the Salcedo Market.
We know what you’re thinking right now: “P595 for a SANDWICH? Anong palaman niyan, ginto?” The answer’s obviously no, but it’s close: The soft, buttery bun is generously stuffed with flavorful lobster meat, and each bite will have you seriously contemplating if it’s worth denting your daily food budget to get another one. Oh, and if the P595 price tag makes you balk, you can opt for their much cheaper (but just as sulit) Shrimp Roll (P295).
2) Poco Deli’s New York Pastrami Sandwich (P360)
Poco Deli is located at 21 East Capitol Drive, Kapitolyo, Pasig City; Ayala Triangle Gardens, Salcedo Village, Makati City; and One Parkade, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City.
You probably already know about Poco Deli’s legendary Bacon Slabs—we’re drooling just thinking about it—but did you know that they have some pretty mean sandwiches as well? The New York Pastrami features several slices of peppery US beef pastrami between sauerkraut, mozzarella, and greens, held nicely between two slices of toasted batard bread. We highly recommend chowing it down alongside a bottle from their impressive beer selection.
3) Quiznos’ BBQ Chicken Melt (P145 small, P190 regular, P235 large)
Quiznos has branches at Alabang Town Center, Eastwood City, Fairview Terraces, Fisher Mall, Gateway, Glorietta, Greenbelt 3, Katipunan, and TriNoma.
For the man who’s watching his waistline, Quiznos’ BBQ Chicken Melt is a great choice. The small version clocks in at under 400 calories, but it doesn’t hold back on its palaman: Generous chunks of chicken, smoked bacon, lettuce, and cheddar cheese drizzled with barbecue sauce. And at P145, we’re definitely not complaining!
4) Subway’s Steak and Cheese Sandwich (P150 for the six-inch, P245 for the footlong)

Steak and cheese is always a good combination—there’s just no way you’ll go wrong with it. Subway’s pocket-friendly version hits the spot: the steak bits are tender, and the cheese is perfectly melted. And with Subway having several branches across the city (they deliver, too!), it's never been more convenient to get your sandwich fix.
5) Mad Marks Creamery & Good Eats’ The Man Sandwich (P170 half, P275 full)
Mad Mark’s Creamery & Good Eats is located at 23 East Capitol Drive, Kapitolyo, Pasig City; 3rd Floor, Central Square, Bonifacio High Street, Global City, Taguig City; and 2nd Floor, UP Town Center, Katipunan Ave., Quezon City.
Before Mad Mark’s became ultra-famous for their ice cream and steaks, they were loved for their huge sandwiches. They were pulled out of the menu for a while, but were later reintroduced to a happy, hungry crowd. Our pick: The aptly named Man Sandwich, which has cheese steak, chicken chunks, mushrooms and crisp veggies, tenderly embraced by homebaked sourdough bread. Get them before they’re pulled out again!
6) Wildflour Cafe + Bakery's California Burger (P495)
Wildflour Cafe + bakery has branches at Salcedo Village, Legaspi Village, Bonifacio Global City, The Podium, and Greenhills.
Yes, we know this one's technically a burger and not a sandwich, but it still has bread and it's listed under “Sandwiches” on Wildflour's menu, so that's what we're classifying it as. Anyway, the star of this bad boy is a 1/3 pound patty made of Australian wagyu beef, crowned with cheddar cheese, tomatoes, and onions. We highly recommend it for your next brunch date with your girlfriend.
7) Tipple & Slaw's Sisig Wrap (P280)
Tiple & Slaw is located at 2/F Forum South Global, Federacion Drive cor. 7th Ave., Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.
Visit Tipple & Slaw during the evening and you'll be greeted by a crowd of college kids and yuppies out to have a great time. When the sun's out, however, Tipple becomes a pretty chill place to grab a meal. Their sandwich selection is wide and impressive: A S'mores Ice Cream Sandwich is even on the menu! But if you want something filling and a bit different, get their Sisig Wrap, which gives you the complete sisig experience—complete with egg and jalapenos—ready to go. Beer na lang ang kulang!
8) Pepi Cubano's The Cubano (P250)
Tropical Palms Condominium, Gallardo St., Legaspi Village, Makati City
Cuban sandwiches won't trigger the same bug-eyed looks the other items on this list tend to cause: They look flat, and aren't overflowing with palaman. But that's because the whole thing is pressed on a flat plancha, making every bite surprisingly filling. In Metro Manila, Pepi Cubano serves some of the best—if not the best—Cubanos out there: The ham and roast pork is surprisingly plentiful and the cheese just oozes out with every bite. We're drooling just thinking about it.
9) Dean & DeLuca's Kansas BBQ Burger (P520)
Dean & DeLuca has branches at the Eton Tower, 128 Dela Rosa cor. VA Rufino sts., Legazpi Village, Makati City and at Edades Tower, Amorsolo Drive, Rockwell, Makati City.
Dean & DeLuca is known worldwide for its great deli and baked goods, so we're not surprised their sandwich selection is excellent. Picking just one sandwich is like choosing a favorite child, but if we really had to choose, we'd go with their Kansas BBQ Burger: Their signature sourdough bread is perfect for the Angus beef patty, maple bacon, and cheddar cheese it embraces.
10) FowlBread's Double Chicken Sandwich (P375)
FowlBread is located at Bldg. 3 Bonifacio High Street, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City.
FowlBread's Chicken Sandwiches are, without a doubt, the star of their no-frills menu. It's pretty massive, with a sheet of crispy-licious chicken skin that will have our favorite bee-mascoted fastfood resto feeling threatened. The regular chicken sandwich is great as is, but the Double Chicken Sandwich has twice the chicken skin, and that's always a good thing!
