If you find yourself feeling sad, anxious, or exhausted, you may be burdened with too much stress. And stress, when not properly managed, can take a toll on your health.

In a recent study conducted by United Kingdom-based dry cleaning and laundry service Zipjet, it was found that Manila is the 10th most stressful city in the world. Manila garnered a total score of 8.92 out of 10, with 10 being the most stressful.

And if you’re one of the many whose feeling stressed right now, here are some things you can do to relieve it in an instant. Dubbed by the Department of Health (DOH) as the 12S Of Stress Management, these techniques will not only have you feeling more relaxed within minutes, because if done regularly, these can help you reduce your stress levels permanently.

1) Self-awareness

DOH Says: Develop a habit of paying attention to your expressions of thought, emotions, and behavior, knowing yourself, getting in touch with your feelings, or being open to experience. The more you know yourself, the better you are at adapting life changes that suit your needs.

2) Scheduling

DOH Says: Optimize the time available to achieve gratifying results. Use a time manager application or buy a notebook organizer.

3) Siesta

DOH Says: Take a nap, short rest, a break or recharge your "battery" to improve productivity. Taking a siesta also helps relax the mind and body muscles.

4) Speak

DOH Says: Talk to someone when you feel overwhelmed or unable to deal with stress on your own. Venting can help you unload unwanted feelings.

5) Sounds

DOH Says: Listen to relaxing and soothing music. Sounds can relieve depression and can even increase self-esteem.

6) Sensation

DOH Says: Indulge yourself with a whole body massage. The magic of touch helps to soothe away stress by unknotting tense and aching muscles, relieving headaches and sleep problems.

7) Stretching

DOH Says: Do simple movements to loosen muscles, lubricate joints, and increase body's oxygen supply.

8) Socials

DOH Says: Engage in fruitful activities that will develop your ability to deal with other people.

9) Smile

DOH Says: Smile ka naman to release stress, calm you down, make you attractive, and make someone else happy.

10) Sports

DOH Says: Engage in playing sports like basketball, tennis, etc. to clear your mind and eventually relieve stress.

11) Stress Debriefing

DOH Says: Submit to a brief crisis intervention to talk about your feelings and reactions to the critical incident.
