Still relying on catering services (or worse, your mom) to come up with food to bring to potluck parties or your company's picnics? News flash: The kitchen has long been neutral territory for men and women, and every guy worth his salt should have at least one signature dish up his sleeve.

So, if you're one of them still iffy ones, go on. Spend some time in the kitchen (and by that we mean not going in there to raid the fridge). Help your parents, your kuya or ate in whipping up their culinary creations. Be one with the place.

Then, once you’re feeling comfortable in there, try these hacks that will make your cooking and kitchen experience a whole lot easier!

1)   HOW TO TELL IF YOUR EGGS ARE ROTTEN

See if your eggs are still edible by placing them in a bowl of cold water. If the eggs sink, it’s still usable. If it floats, chuck that rotten egg in the trash can, where it belongs.

2)   WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS

Put it in the microwave for 15 to 20 seconds and roll it around before squeezing so it’ll produce more juice. This works for other citrus fruits, too!

3)   BYE BYE (ONION-INDUCED) TEARS!

Stick a slice of bread in your mouth while slicing onions—it’ll lessen the crying.

4)   NO BOILING OVER!

Boiling something? Place a wooden spoon on top of your pot. Since wood isn’t good at conducting heat, it’ll stop the hot water from overflowing.

5)   WANT IT HOT AND MOIST?

Your rice and baked goods, that is. Place a cup of water in the microwave when you’re reheating your leftover pizza to keep it from drying out.

6)   SLICE MEAT THINLY, EASILY

Partially freeze the meat before chopping it up to achieve the nice, clean, thin slices you’ll get when you order stir-fry at a restaurant.

7)   CLEAN YOUR PRODUCE THOROUGHLY

Scrub your fruits and veggies with a mix of baking soda and water before munching on them to remove dirt, insects, and pesticides.

8)   TOO SALTY?

If you accidentally put a bit too much salt in your stew, you could try adding a whole peeled potato to your dish. It will soak up the excess saltiness and add some starch to make your dish heartier. Don’t forget to remove it when it's boiled though.

Speaking of potatoes...

9)   PRESERVE YOUR
PATATAS!

Dunk raw potatoes in water immediately after slicing them so they won’t oxidize and turn into that yucky gray shade.

10)   BE A (FISH) GRILL KING

Grill your fish on a bed on lemon slices—this will keep the meat from sticking to the grill (don’t we all hate it when that happens?) and, as a nice bonus, add a zesty twist to your dish. Win-win!
