Let’s talk about the birds and the bees for a minute: Two weeks ago, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) officially declared 51 contraceptive products as safe and non-abortifacient.
The Supreme Court had promised earlier on that they would lift their temporary restraining order on contraceptives should the FDA declare them as safe. Now that that’s out of the way, your wives and girlfriends aren’t losing their birth control! Obviously, that’s a win for women, but what does this surprise move for the government mean for men?
The full effectivity of the Revised Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) of the RH law officially began last November 13, as per Commission on Population executive director Dr. Juan Perez III. Women will now have unprecedented access to the 51 approved contraceptives, which include the pill, ring, and implant. This part is pretty obvious: Now you don’t have to worry about a sexual dystopia in which condoms are the only available form of birth control. Men who are married or are in monogamous relationships that don’t necessitate the use of a condom can continue to benefit from these alternatives.
It’s pretty common practice for boyfriends or husbands to help pay for their partner’s birth control. Prior to the FDA’s announcement, birth control pills in particular were getting more and more expensive; we shouldn’t have to dent our wallets just because we want to prevent pregnancy. Now that there are no obstacles to the RH law, you don’t have to worry about skyrocketing prices due to low stocks at pharmacies.
The RH law also subsidizes birth control for areas with limited access, such as provinces and urban poor communities. This is good news for all of us who want the Philippines to keep its population regulated, and this is a step in ensuring that children are not born to parents who are not financially or emotionally prepared.
Finally, some of you have girlfriends or wives who suffer from polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), hormonal acne, and other imbalances. Hormonal birth control alleviates, if not totally eliminates, these complications. That’s one less health worry off the table!
Remember, any decision that affects women’s reproductive health affects you, too. This move by the government is a step forward in sex positivity—we’re glad they realized they shouldn’t be messing with women’s bodies. Now go forth and enjoy safe, responsible, FDA-approved sex.
