After years of courting, she's finally said yes. You two get along so well that nothing can separate you. What's next? Are you going to pop the question? Think she's ready to have her own family? We don't know. The only thing we are certain of at the moment is this: You are going to gain weight.
Let us say that again: You will soon get bigger just because you are in a relationship.
According to a study conducted by the Obesity Society, "love pounds" is a real thing. In the longitudinal study, the researchers carefully observed the "vertical growth" (a.k.a. weight gains) of 8,000 individuals, aged 12 to 28, of which 3,600 were in a relationship.
The individuals' weight measurements were tracked for five years. These are their most important findings:
1) Women who stayed single gained an average of 15 pounds over five years, while single men gained 24 pounds.
2) Newly married women in that same age group put on 24 pounds in five years, while newly married men gained 30 pounds.

Andrea Meltzer, an assistant professor of psychology at Florida State, explains that this is because "you're more likely to engage in somewhat unhealthier choices when you're with the one you love." It boils down to the fact that you're comfortable, and you aren't as vigilant when it comes to making choices regarding your health.
What can we do? Meltzer encourages couples to cook at home more instead of consistently opting to eat in the mall. She also urges partners to work out together for a more "intense" and "productive" conditioning. And more than anything, she said couples should do more things that are focused on being on the move. Staying at home and watching your favorite movies will do no good for your body.
Meltzer told Huffington Post: "By focusing more on the health-related benefits of weight maintenance, people may be able to avoid potentially unhealthy weight gain once they enter a relationship."
