Manspreading—or the act of spreading one's legs when sitting—while you're on a jeepney may make you look like a jerk, but according to researchers, it is the secret to scoring more dates.
The study done by Tanya Vacharkulksemsuk, a post-doctoral research fellow at the University of California, Berkeley, and her team examined 144 videos of speed-dates. The dates alternately paired 12 men and 12 women for four minutes at a time. They noticed that those who sat with legs wide apart were deemed more attractive than those who folded their arms in "closed postures."
They did not stop there. The researchers also conducted an experiment over an online dating website that's similar to Tinder. They created profiles of three men and three women. One showed them in open poses such as leaning back with legs outstretched and standing up with their arms out wide. Others show "contractive" poses, for example, by folding their arms and crossing their legs. The profiles were active for two weekends.
As expected, people with more open posture received more requests to meet up. The effect was the same for both sexes, although the effect seemed more evident for men.
Vacharkulksemsuk explained that such body language is appealing because the brain associates it with dominance and openness.
She then concluded that: "It is evident that postural expansion can dramatically increase a person's chances of making a successful initial romantic connection."
So spread your legs, gents, and get 'em ladies.
