A lot of people dream about having a threesome. In fact, several studies have found that it is one of the top sexual fantasies of both sexes.

However, we don't know much about what people want when it comes to threeways. Why? Because questions on most surveys are very basic, like: "Have you ever fantasized about having a threesome?" Questions like this leave out more important details—so a team of researchers decided to dig deeper into the matter.

The resulting study, published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, analyzed survey answers from 274 heterosexuals aged 18 to 24. The participants were asked to rate how open they were to participating in two types of mixed gender threesomes: two females and one male (FFM) or two males and one female (MMF). Results show that 82 percent of men and 31 percent of women are interested in having a threesome. "Compared to the women, the men reported significantly more positive attitudes and greater interest...in mixed-gender threesomes," the study reads.

More importantly, men and women didn't differ when it came to their interest in MMF threesomes—both had relatively low levels of interest in this kind of threeway. Women don't like MMF due to safety reasons while men highly prefer the idea of an FFM due to obvious reasons.

In addition, they were asked to rate how important it was to know the other people involved. Men were the pickier lot, and reported having a strong preference for being friends, or at least acquaintances, with the other two people. Women, on the other hand, said they only cared about knowing the other people if they were the additional partner.

These findings just show that not all threesomes are equal in the eyes of men and women.
