What do you wear to sleep? Basketball shorts and a sando? Boxers and that ratty shirt from your grade school days?
If you said yes to all those questions, you might not be getting the best sleep you possibly can. Go nude, we say. Your body can keep itself cooler in the nude which translates to benefits that you might not readily notice. While we don't condone male nudity, we're all for the promotion of better life habits. Sleeping naked happens to be one of them.
Here are some scientific proof:
1) Abs anyone?
Your body cools down at night naturally. The cooler your body temperature is, the better it becomes at producing growth hormones, which, according to Webmd.com, promote muscle growth and fat loss.
2) You'll age better.
The same growth hormones that help regulate weight are also known as effective anti-aging agent. These hormones repair your cells in your sleep, and help keep the skin from getting too old too fast, according to a study, "Growth Hormone System: Skin Interaction," published on News-medical.net.
"Clinical observations and analysis have shown the important role played by the GH system in the development, maintenance, and repair of the skin," the researchers explain. "In fact, the dermal structures directly reflect the various changes in GH production that occur in the different phases of life." Translation: sleep naked, keep the body cool so it can produce GH better, stay young.
3) It can make for a healthier penis.
If you want to maximize the amount of sperm you can release during sex, ditch your PJs and sleep butt naked. Researchers from the National Institute of Child Health and Development and Stanford University tracked 500 men, each of whom dictated their sleep habits and choice of underwear for a year. When researchers analyzed participants' sperm quality, they discovered that men who stuck with a boxer-by-day-commando-by-night routine had a 25 percent lower rate of damaged DNA in their sperm than men who wore tight underwear all the time.
Adds fertility expert and lead researcher Allan Pacey in a New York Post report: "We have known for some time that men who increase the temperature of their testicles, either through the heat exposure at work or by wearing tight underwear, have pooper semen quality compared to men whose testicles are cooler."
4) It enhances intimacy.
Sleeping naked is good, but sleeping naked while you're with your partner is even better. Here's what science says: Skin-on-skin contact triggers release of oxytocin, a hormone that plays a huge role in intimacy, social bonding, and sexuality. It's so important that without it, orgasms wouldn't be orgasmic.
A study published in National Center for Biotechnology Information in 2013 reinforces this fact, citing that oxytocin directly gives your sex drive a major boost—which is useful, considering you're naked in bed with your lady.
