You're probably already tired of the fish-, tofu-, and veggies-based food your mom/wife/chef (ikaw na!) has been feeding you the past few days. We know, Holy Week grub aren't exactly the best, but it's only one week out of 52 fatty-food-filled weeks. Where's your Semana Santa spirit?

However, a man cannot exist on ginisang munggo alone. Abstaining from meat doesn’t have to mean bland food or drastically cutting down on much-needed protein. This is why we harangued our good friends over at for some good ol' meat-free but protein-packed recipes!

And for those wondering, yes, these dishes taste great even without taba and litid. In fact, they're so good, you wouldn’t mind if every day is Black Friday.

Broccoli probably isn’t the first food you'd think of when searching for protein sources, but this humble veggie has zero fat and more protein per calorie than steak. It's also perfect for those looking to lose a few pounds the next few days; Mike Tyson shed 100lbs in less than a year with a vegan diet, which included broccoli and rice for dinner. As for the taste? Melted cheese, baby!

What you need:
1/2 cup chopped onion
2 tablespoons oil
2 cups cooked rice
1 cup cheddar cheese, sliced or grated
1 cup broccoli, cut into florets
1/4 cup milk
1 can cream of mushroom  or cream of chicken soup
1 teaspoon salt  

What to do: 
1) Sauté onion in oil. Add rice and remaining ingredients; mix. Pour into a casserole dish.
2) Bake at 350ºF for 20 to 30 minutes. Serve immediately.

Remember the “Machete Diet”? It sounded like just another PR stunt but the meals, which basically used fiber- and protein-rich kamote in place of white rice, can actually produce abs (and devastating utot but, you know, no pain, no gain). The trick is how to make it palatable. Here’s a spicy, fat-burning twist to the good ol' sweet potato. 

What you need:

1 kilo orange kamote, peeled and sliced
5 tablespoons olive oil 
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1 tablespoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper

What to do:
1) Preheat oven to 450°F
2) Soak sweet potatoes in cold water for 20 minutes. Drain and transfer to a baking sheet.
3) Toss sweet potatoes in olive oil. In a bowl, combine brown sugar, salt, and black pepper. Toss sweet potatoes in sugar mixture until coated evenly.
4) Bake in the oven for 15 minutes or until sweet potatoes are crispy. Let cool.
