It’s the holiday season! Christmas is right around the corner and that means it’s time for celebrating, shopping, and of course, eating.

I know that you don’t want to do a double take when you look at your waistline come January, so let's go over some calorie-burning activities that are appropriate for the holidays. Did you know that you can still lose weight without ever leaving your couch? This one's for you!

Sitting on your couch and playing video games go hand in hand. Sorry, but you’re not going to lose any weight by watching TV and changing the channel. Video games, however, are not necessarily all bad.

Of course playing interactive sports games on Nintendo Wii that require standing and moving around will help you burn the most calories. Even first person shooters can be beneficial. Studies have shown that video games actually boost thumb and finger strength, and certain games can improve hand-eye coordination.

I’m sure everybody will be shopping more frequently this season, buying presents for loved ones and friends. I for one get really tired when shopping. Especially if it's with my girlfriend and she’s looking for new clothes…

Believe it or not, shopping does burn a ton of calories. For example, pushing a cart around for 45 minutes can burn up to 300 calories. If you take in mind the crowded shopping malls of Manila and navigating through swarms of people, you’re bound to lose some weight.

A 68 kilo person will burn about 100 calories an hour while they’re sleeping. On average, I lose about 1-1.5 kilos in my sleep. It fluctuates depending on my weight and the type of sleep I’m getting.

One of the reasons it fluctuates is that you burn more calories when you are in a deep REM sleep, as opposed to a shallow sleep where you’re tossing and turning throughout the night. So get a good night's sleep! I recommend eight hours or more.

Funny, a lot of people want to know if chewing is a legitimate form of exercise. Sadly, doing so only burns 11 calories per hour, or 132 calories in 12 hours. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to chew gum for half the day, only to lose that much.

However, there are some good things about chewing gum other than the amount of calories burned. It has been proven to boost metabolism, aid digestion, and decrease appetite, which are all good things for a weight watcher. Just make sure you stick to sugarless gums.

  • Sweeping - 39 calories (15 mins) /156 calories (per hour)
  • Vacuuming - 43 calories (15 mins) /170 calories (per hour)
  • Mopping - 43 calories (15 mins) /170 calories (per hour)
  • Scrubbing floors on hands and knees - 48 calories (15 mins) /190 (per hour)
  • Washing dishes - 22 calories (15 mins) /88 calories (per hour)

Of course, nothing beats going to the gym, but hey, it’s Christmas time, so enjoy feasting too. I know I will.
