Remember the woman behind the P50 Savings Challenge that we featured and went viral six months ago?
Looks like Yona Abella has moved on from keeping 50-peso bills and is now aiming to do a bigger savings dare: the 1-Million Barya Challenge.
In a now trending post, Yona, along with her partner Kit Cunanan, shared on Facebook their “Walang Isang Million Kung Walang Barya” savings progress. Their technique: to save and keep every coin that they have at the end of each day.
In an interview with FHM.com.ph, Yona shared that they have already saved a total of P5,000 in coins alone. They started it six months ago, right after the P50 Saving Challenge.
Meanwhile, some netizens are concerned about this challenge.
There’s currently no law about limiting the number of coins being kept by a person. There is, however, a pending senate bill filed by Sen. Sergio Osmeña III last 2014, titled “Anti-Hoarding Of Philippine Legal Tender Coins Act.” This bill exempts those keeping their coins in piggy banks, jars, drawers, and purses, though BSP is yet to determine the maximum amount of coins a person is allowed to keep.
As for the negative commenters, no need to worry about coin shortage, as the couple is planning to put their savings in a bank so the coins will still circulate.
