A lot of words have been written about the Honda Civic Type R, many have said that its looks are too wild and appeal solely to the younger crowd.

We think that doesn't really apply as much if you're talking about the Philippine setting. Because while we had it, the youth were all over it as expected, but every "older" car guy with a pulse we've talked to could also relate with their own stories of having/wanting one in their youth and how the FK8 tempts them to part with their children's college fund–such is the cult of the Civic that exists in the Philippines.

We decided to take it out to a somewhat infamous late-night spot and see what the local's unfiltered thoughts would be. The backdrop should look very familiar to Honda stans and owners.

Sadly, there were no enthusiasts to be found that particular night. Perhaps the horrendous traffic caused by the heavy construction scared them away, but we also got a near-empty highway as a reward for our patience in traffic. During the said jam, the Type R drove like...a totally normal car. You can nitpick, but it never felt like a fickle 300-hp turbocharged FWD rocket when doing plebian things–and that's a major plus. The 2.0 liter K20 engine even gets decent economy. We clocked 8km/l+ during not too conservative driving.

Step on it though and the Type R pulls all the way to the top of the tachometer. It also hooks up effortlessly with its LSD and trick suspension treatment that does wave goodbye to excessive torque steer like magic. In fact, the only thing we noticed was that you could get wheelspin in 2nd and 3rd which only made us giddier.

With no one to ask, we could only wonder how much "plus" the denizens of the night would give to a mighty car like this during all those endless bench racing discussions. Would its turbocharged motor find its way into the engine bays of other Hondas as well? Do they think it's too wild-looking maybe? We're already seeing base and RS-spec Civics borrowing its aggressive look after all.

Finally, At P3 million, will it hold its value just like the SIR's (sometimes even just SIR "body") that sell for surprising amounts until today? Honestly, we think yes–and we're hoping Honda Philippines goes way beyond the 200 units that have officially made it to our shores.
