As soon as our good buds from Toyota handed us the keys to the sleek black Hilux, we all stared at the biggie for a whole minute, completely mesmerized by the aggressive look, wedge-shaped waistline and rounded door contours. The hot baby screams big, strong, and stylish.
Then we wondered how many different things you could fit on that flatbed—cases of beer, stacks of pizza boxes, makeshift stages from seedy KTV bars, dancing go-go girls, beavers, woodchucks…But we had none of any of these that night, only sweaty rock stars who’d just finished gigging in Saguijo Café in Makati. So we made like promotions agency band managers, recruiting musicians to haul their asses to Japan.
Among the bands who played that night in Saguijo, fun popsters Boldstar gamely volunteered. We did the analogies: FHM, Boldstar, Rock stars. Perfect. So we asked ‘em to try a hand at the wheel, drive it around for a bit, feel its power.
“I love it. We can park this in the middle of Ayala and have a concert!” front man Echo claps in excitement after hitting on the brakes. “Eh kung sa EDSA na lang para mas maraming tao?” bass runner Jazz suggests. “O puwede nating iakyat sa mountain at dun tayo mag-concert! Sana dumating na yung drummer nating si Marie,” guitar and mic guy Justin exclaims.
Or plough through a rowdy crowd if they dare spit at them, what with its 4x4 power turning massive wheels. And the list of whacked up ideas were tossed around till the wee morning. These guys wouldn’t have stopped if we didn’t notice the break of light in the sky, and if we had more stash to buy ‘em beer.
The Hilux is simply loaded with rock-star appeal not only outside, but on the inside as well. The overall interior is just like a car, overly exceeding the usual pickup standards. And we have to mention its silky two-tone color coordinated design. Real mod. And because Toyota’s such a protection junkie, it lashed in three-point ELR seatbelts, their vehicle security system, side impact beams, an anti-flooding system, a collapsible steering column, and a crash safety body to make sure that even the rowdiest rock star will be safe in the truck.
When we asked Boldstar to hand the keys, they wouldn’t dare budge. They’d even change the topic hand whenever we brought the turnover up. If we had taken our “Japan promotions” private joke seriously, we’d have the boys doing renditions of “September” in no time.
