It's a good time to be a grease monkey right now as the country's biggest annual wheel-fest, the Manila International Auto Show, invades the World Trade Center in Pasay. Running from April 9 to April 12, the show is something that no self-respecting autophile would want to miss.
This year's event is said to be the biggest as it fills 30,000 square meters with around 560 vehicles—from classics to concepts to shiny new ones. We dropped by yesterday, opening day, to give you a preview you some of our favorite wheels on display. Check them out below!
In spite of its subdued styling, there's nothing subdued about the Golf GTI's performance. The top-of-the-line Volks masterpiece packs a 220-horsepower turbocharged engine. This isn't your tito's old hatchback!
2) 2015 Volkswagen Beetle
The iconic kotseng kuba has become a little less cute to make it a whole lot cooler. It's neither the fastest nor the sexiest, but if personality is what you're after, here's what you'd want.
3) 2015 Mini Cooper S
The Cooper S retains that old Mini Cooper quirkiness while improving its practicality. The car has grown from its usual two-door configuration and has now become a more traditional five-door hatch. Great for Cooper fans who want easier access!
4) All-New Mazda 2
It won Japan's Car Of The Year award in 2014 and 2015 and it's a subcompact that features Mazda's big-boy Skyactiv setup. But screw all that. The only thing that you really want to know is that it looks like a complete bad-ass:
5) All-New Mazda MX-5
We could've told you that the Mazda 2 was the sexiest car on display that day. But that would've been a lie. Because that title belongs to the all-new Mazda roadster below. James Bond, his preference for Aston Martins notwithstanding, would have loved to drive this car around on his off days. It's pretty powerful for a small car too, packing around 155 horsepower.
6) Ford Mustang
The original pony car packs the testosterone, the lineage, and that beautiful galloping horse logo to make us want to pony up the money for it. Few other cars have the power to make a man feel so manly, and the 2015 version doesn't digress.
7) Subaru Outback
The Outback is an SUV that lives up to its name. In spite of a gallery of luxury features such as voice-activated GPS navigation and advanced driver assist technology, this bruiser is ready for the outdoors with its brawny 3.6-liter engine, CVT transmission, and all-wheel drive system.
8) All-New Ford Everest
We're more of an indoor kind of guy, but the all-new Everest's muscular styling, that bad-ass grille and elevated stance had us feeling like going on a dirty, muddy off-road rally. And it plans to indulge you: It has a workman-like 3.2L Duratorq engine that features 200 horsepower and an amazing 470 Nm of torque, and an impressive Terrain Management System which allows the car to adapt according to the road situation.
9) BYD Qin
It's from a relatively new carmaker from China. It looks like a hybrid Honda Civic and Toyota Altis but it's the hybrid electric power train that's able to travel 70 kilometers on all-electric power that has us intrigued.
10) Ford Expedition Platinum
The man in the photo is missing out on the best part of this scene, but that just tells you something about the Expedition's excellence. The 2015 Expedition features a 370-horsepower, 3.5L V6 engine, Brunello luxury leather seats, and a titan-like appearance on the road. Surely enough reason to grab all our attention.
ALL THE OTHER THINGS
Those 10 dream cars weren't the only ones that stuck to our memory. We also saw some other memorable sights during our brief stay—some of which you can still selfie at once you visit!
