Even before its second installment hits theaters, director James Gunn has confirmed that a third film that will bookend the Guardians of the Galaxy (GotG) franchise as a trilogy is already in the works.

In his Facebook account, Gunn posted a lengthy and emotional message, where he finally admitted that he has signed with Marvel to work on the third GotG film.

“There is a history in Hollywood of haphazard endings to trilogies, and I didn’t want to become a part of that dishonorable tradition of pretending the third one doesn’t exist. I couldn’t do it for the money, and I couldn’t do it because it was what other people wanted me to do. I needed to do it because it was what I needed to do,” he said.

“So, yes, I’m returning to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3... I can’t fricking wait to get started,” he added.

Gunn also revealed that the third film will hagve a big impact on the entirety of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As it turns out, the third volume of GotG is going to be an extremely important installment for the future of Marvel movies.

“Much of what’s happened in the MCU for the past ten or so years has been leading, in a big way, to the Avengers: Infinity War. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will happen after all that. It will conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy, and help catapult both old and new Marvel characters into the next ten years and beyond,” he said.

Right now, we have no idea about the plot and release date for Guardians Vol. 3.

But we could say that it would be out around late 2019—2020 is our best bet—at the earliest based on the release dates of the two-part Avengers: Infinity War slated for 2018 and 2019.

For now, let’s enjoy Guardians Vol. 2, which revolves around the story of protagonist Peter Quill aka Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) learning about his father.

Guardians Vol. 2 hits theaters on April 26.
