300 Rise Of An Empire, showing on March 6, got our testosterone exploding. It also reminded us of one of the funniest YouTube videos ever: Benjo At Ang Batalyong Pitbull!
Come March 6, one of our most-awaited films of the year opens in cinemas.
No, we ain't talking about John Lloyd Cruz's next tear-jerker. We're talking about something far, far manlier: 300: Rise Of An Empire—just the mere mention of which makes us feel like abs are growing on our beer bellies.
We ain't going to deny it; we are hardcore fans of 300, Sparta, and that brave soul, Leonidas. The original film, which came out in 2006, was an explosive, action flick that had really cool, super slow-mo stabbing scenes, and a super high-contrast look that burned our retinas.
We loved every moment of it.
And now we're about to have more of it as the next installment that took nearly a decade to make is about to land on our hungry consciousness.
Like the original, Rise Of An Empire is based on a Frank Miller graphic novel. This one is based on Xerxes, that really tall guy who calls himself the "God-King," wears a lot of gold jewelry, and occasionally uses humans as a ladder.
He returns in Rise Of An Empire, where the Greek general Themistokles (Sullivan Stapleton) attempts to unite all of Greece by leading the charge that will change the course of the war. Approaching from across the Mediterranean are the massive invading Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god Xerxes (a role reprised by Rodrigo Santoro), and Artemisia (Eva Green), vengeful commander of the Persian navy.
Is it a sequel or a prequel? According to 300 director Zack Snyder, it's neither: “It’s more of a companion film than a sequel or prequel. This is a sea battle that took place in the same three days as Thermopylae. And with an equally significant outcome.”
And we've got this certain feeling that 300: Rise Of An Empire will have the same potential of generating quotes that will last us again another decade or so. O, sabay-sabay: "This is SPARTA!"
Or as Benjo would say it: "GO BORDS!"
Enjoy, 300 fans! And get ready to make parodies for 300: Rise of an Empire!
Opening across the Philippines on Thursday March 6 at IMAX 3D, Digital 3D, 2D, and 30mm formats, 300: Rise of an Empire is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
