Almost every series has at least one sword user, whether that individual is a hero or villain. At times, it might just even be a side character. Case in point: the sword will always be a staple in anime since it’s easy to develop skills and techniques for characters with this weapon.
To recognize the various heroes that have taught us the way of the sword, here’s a short compilation of some of the most iconic swordsmen who've sliced their way to countless victories.
Trunks (Dragon Ball)
First up is Trunks, the only super Saiyan from the Dragon Ball multiverse who uses a sword as his primary weapon. Although Saiyan’s usually use their bare fists and energy blasts during combat, Trunks is pretty much a proficient swordie who cut short Frieza’s hopes of revenge against Goku. Check out this iconic slice and dice move during his series introduction:
Kirito (Sword Art Online)
Kirigaya Kazuto or simply Kirito in the world of SAO doesn’t always go all-out while fighting. But when he does, he’ll reveal his signature dual sword wielding skills that can easily defeat any foe he faces in the battlefield.
Kenshin Himura (Samurai X)
He’s not known as the legendary “Battousai the slasher” for no reason. Despite shunning his bloody past to live the life of a peaceful wanderer, Kenshin still has the killer instincts he once possessed during his days as an elite assassin, but avoids taking lives with his special reverse-edged sword.
Guts has exceptional strength that allows him to wield a giant greatsword that can easily mow down five foes with one swing. His blade and title as the “Black Swordsman” also strike fear into the hearts of his enemies. It’s no wonder that he usually winds up fighting demons instead since no normal man would be crazy enough to challenge this monster.
Hiei (YuYu Hakusho)
When he’s not using his overpowered Black Dragon technique to totally erase his enemies, Hiei’s weapon of choice is his sword that he uses to slice up or behead his foes in an instant.
Killer Bee (Naruto)
Eight swords, yo. This rapping shinobi weirdo has an unconventional fighting style. Just think of him as a ninja version of Tekken’s Eddie Gordo, who wields eight swords in various joints of his body.
Levi (Attack on Titan)
The cool Captain of the Survey Corps is literally like a fidget spinner when he fights. Levi basically uses a high-speed spin attack to quickly dispatch any titan that stands in his way.
Levi’s god mode:
Roronoa Zoro (One Piece)
Zoro already has big shoes to fill as the first mate of aspiring Pirate King Monkey D. Luffy, but he’s also gunning for the title of the world’s strongest swordsman. Fortunately for him, the man who currently holds the title helped him hone his Santoryu three-sword style, but he’s still got a long way to go before becoming the best.
