Mapua Cardinals, 1983-1986
Who were your mentors as a Mapua Cardinal?
Sa first two years ko [sa Mapua], si Coach Angel de Jesus, former Mapuan. In my third year, nung 1985 and 1986, si Coach Arturo Trajano. Maganda yung nabigay sa Mapua. Nagchampion ang Mapua. Would you believe kung naka-ilang championships pa lang ang Mapua? Sabi nga every 16 years. Nung 1981 sina Coach Leo Isaac. Sixteen years earlier, 1965, yung batch ni Coach Arturo Trajano. Tapos yung back-to-back ni Benny Cheng around 1989 to 1990 under Coach Joel Banal.
What were your best collegiate basketball memories?
Two years straight, 1983 to 1984, wala kaming panalo. Nung 1985 nanalo na kami. Para kaming nag-champion nun, ha ha! On that year, naging consistent ang game ko—tapos nag-MVP nung 1985-1986 season. Dun nakita ang potential ko. Yun na talaga ang discovery of Alvin Patrimonio.
What was your jersey number back then?
Nung mag-start ako, 6 kasi may rule ata na 4 to 15 [lang yung puwedeng jersey number]. Eventually nung nag-16 ako, nag-MVP ako. Naisip ko destined sa akin yung number na yun.
Is it true that varsity players get some sort of leeway from teachers?
Sa Mapua wala. Kailangan alagaan mo yung academics mo. Civil engineering ang course ko nun and my favorite subjects were Math, Calculus, and Trigonometry.
Who was your inspiration in playing basketball back in college?
Nung time na yun may PBA na and maka-Toyota ako. So idol ko nun sina Jaworski and Fernandez. Dream ko nun one day makakampi ko sila—o makalaban. And naging dream ko rin yung achievements nila maabot ko rin. At yung yung nag-motivate sa akin.
