DC: Rebirth kicks off this week with DC Universe: Rebirth Special #1, an 80-page one-shot written by Geoff Johns, Chief Creative Officer of the comic book publishing giant.

Just to clarify, the event will relaunch—and not reboot (which completely discards all established continuity or storylines)—all of DC's titles. Aside from Action Comics and Detective Comics, DC's oldest comic book series, everything will be numbered as issue #1, thereby creating new jump off points for your favorite heroes and villains and signaling a new direction for their stories.

The entire DC universe is set back in the time of New 52, which, if you recall, led to the revamp of all of storylines in 2011.

But it’s not just a rebirth in the sense of new #1s. With this latest comic book event, DC hopes to take what is great about its characters and bring them back to their core. From there, it can then move on and dream up fresh tales that'll be pleasurable to both longtime collectors and new readers.

The one-shot by Johns is a testament to this as it sees the return of familiar faces.

According to Johns' exclusive interview with comic book resources, the Rebirth initiative will reinforce concepts from the pre-Flashpoint continuity (the precursor to New 52)—particularly the idea of legacy, which was hardly emphasized in New 52's storytelling—and build "on everything that's been published since Action Comics #1 up through The New 52."

Every comic book series currently under DC will be affected by the Rebirth event. Some will have special one-shot “Rebirth” issues while others will go straight directly to their “1” issue.

We list all the titles to watch for here, which was revealed at WonderCon 2016, grouped according to “family”: the Batman Family, Superman Family (with Wonder Woman), and the Justice League. Other notable titles which do not fall under these categories are bunched in a separate group.
