The new Dragon Ball TV series, Dragon Ball Super, premiered last July 5 in Japan—18 years after Dragon Ball GT went off the air.

We haven't seen a full episode yet, though if you're crafty enough, you'll probably find it online. No word has also come from Bandai regarding an English release.

What we have seen though is the intro for the new series. It features the song "Chozetsu Dynamic" from singer-songwriter Kazuya Yoshii, and has a tone that's more in line with what Dragon Ball Z established as opposed to Dragon Ball GT—the sequel which is primarily known for not being helmed by series creator Akira Toriyama. GT wasn't that big a hit with fans; Super is regarded as Toriyama's way of correcting that.

Based on the intro, we're off to a good start. Watch it below, and see how we compare it to the original "Chala!" DBZ intro. (Someone start subbing the series now!)

THE TITLE FRAME

Dragon Ball Z:

Dragon Ball Super:

The verdict: Super's sun looks mighty fierce but we've got to give it to the Z's incredibly jovial dragon that looks more like a mascot for a Chinese restaurant than a symbol for a series featuring skin-searing energy beams and galaxy-shaking punches.

DBS - 0, DBZ - 1

FATHER-SON BONDING MOMENT

Dragon Ball Z:

Dragon Ball Super:

The verdict: If we were Goku's kid, we'd always choose "Take a ride on the Kinton Cloud" over "Gardening with Mommy Chi-chi" as a way to bond with dad.

DBS - 0, DBZ - 2

ACTUAL SHOT OF THE DRAGON BALL(S)

Dragon Ball Z:

Dragon Ball Super:

The verdict: Z's "1" ball is incredibly shiny and attractive but ask any Dragon Ball character, and they'd always pick the second image. DB fans know how hard it is to put these darned balls together.

DBS - 1, DBZ - 2

TOKEN PICCOLO MOMENT

Dragon Ball Z:

Dragon Ball Super:

The verdict: Piccolo shows off indie-style acting in the first frame—calm and subtle—and goes theatrical in the second frame—frazzled like a boy who's watching porn for the first time. We pick the second one.

DBS - 1, DBZ - 3

SCENE SHOWING A MONKEY

Dragon Ball Z:

Dragon Ball Super:

The verdict: Siyempre kay Mr. Pogi kami!

DBS - 2, DBZ - 3

SUPER SAIYAN TRANSFORMATIONS

The verdict: Sorry, Vegeta; you've been upstaged by Goku again. That golden-haired diva!

DBS - 3, DBZ - 3

GOKU CHARGING UP

Dragon Ball Z:

Dragon Ball Super:

The verdict: That Dragon Ball Z image of Goku channeling electricity to his body is an iconic image for Dragon Ball fans. The Dragon Ball Super version has too much going on—the dragon's head, the earth crumbling all around, some weird pink explosion in the background—so we'll stick with the original.

DBS - 3, DBZ - 4

GOHAN HANGING OUT WITH THE DRAGON

Dragon Ball Z:

Dragon Ball Super:

The verdict: In Z, Gohan looks like a kid who's having the time of his life jumping across mountains while an epic beast tears through the clouds. In Super, Gohan looks like a bored office dude who's actually just imagining this whole "I'm free! And I'm flying with a cool dragon and my bestest best friends in the whole world!" scene from his office desk.

DBS - 3, DBZ - 5

THE CHASE SCENE

Dragon Ball Z:

Dragon Ball Super:

The verdict: See? We told you Gohan has become a corporate sell-out. While he's filing taxes in his seafoam green cardigan and yellow-framed glasses, he looks out the window to see his friends Majin Boo (and the puppy he once saved) and Mr. Satan playing mataya-taya. Deep inside, he's reminiscing that one time when he nearly got eaten by a dinosaur.

DBS - 3, DBZ - 6

THE BULMA SCENE

Dragon Ball Z:

Dragon Ball Super:

The verdict: Which Bulma would you like? The one who sits around, sipping juice, looking all tita-like? Or the one riding a scooter in a tube top that's designed for wardrobe malfunctions? Exactly.

DBS - 3, DBZ - 7

THE CAST ROUNDUP

Dragon Ball Z:

Dragon Ball Super:

The verdict: We actually like the Super version better because everyone's in the shot and that... Oh, wait...

Just when Super was about to steal one, Goku saves the day—as he has done countless times—by turning Super Saiyan! You blonde diva, you!

Final score: DBS - 3, DBZ - 8

And that's it. Dragon Ball Z's intro is officially better than Dragon Ball Super. We're obviously the ultimate source for anime, so please take our word very seriously!
