Things are looking great in time for the 45th anniversary of the Mazinger Z franchise as Toei Animation unveiled the first full visual of the upcoming film adaptation for the popular ‘70s mecha anime.

So far, the biggest question was whether Mazinger Z Infinity will be an animated or live-action movie. Based on the trailer, it will apparently be a combination of 2D animation and CGI formats.

Its story will feature former Mazinger Z pilot Koji Kabuto who is now a scientist, ten years after he saved the world from the clutches of the evil genius Dr. Hell. But a new fate awaits Koji when he discovers a mysterious life form buried deep under Mt. Fuji.

The film will be helmed by veteran director Junji Shimizu (One Piece, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Slam Dunk). Lead protagonist Koji Kabuto will be voiced by Showtaro Morikubo, who is best known for his role as Naruto’s Shikamaru Nara.

Meanwhile, Toei also launched a crowdfunding campaign to further promote the film where backers can get exclusive Mazinger Z merchandise.

Mazinger Z Infinity will hit theaters in Japan on January 13, 2018. It’s not yet clear whether there will be an international version for foreign audiences.
