Few are the moments that a man is allowed to scream in a shrill voice without having others question the legitimacy of his balls. We are men, and as men, it is expected that we stand brave and tall, with our chests all puffed up as we beat on it like a jungle king— even in the face of real pants-shitting terror.

Even if by “real pants-shitting terror” we mean that time when those zombie dogs crashed through the windows in the original Resident Evil. Our reaction was decidedly something that Chuck Norris would totally disapprove of: we flinched. Like mice being dropped in a snake pit.

“It’s just a videogame” we keep telling ourselves. But the fear is real, and the experience is oftentimes, in comparison to watching movies, a lot more nerve-wracking with the action placed right in your hands. Many times in a horror game, our instincts will tell us to just drop the controller, and just go catch some Pokemon. But we choose to endure, don’t we? Sure, we’re bound to scream like little girls here and there, but only because a stupid ghost thought it a good idea to drop by rudely. Such is a perfectly legitimate moment to let out a loud one.

Here now’s a list of our favorite horror games that put us in a terror grip so tight we almost hated them. It’s Halloween, thereby making this an appropriate moment to revisit these games and the nightmares they caused us.
