All good things must come to an end.

In the case of the hit third-person shooter series for the Xbox 360, Gears of War, the end is a fittingly epic one.

Gears of War 3 is bigger, and badder—an example of a game that builds upon everything that its prequels brought to the table to help propel it to a massive climax that’s visually jaw-dropping and intense to the bone. Just as the bloodbaths and epic boss battles return, so does the feeling of despair that has been the resounding theme for much of the series.

Things are at its worst for the humans as the last remaining faction of resistance against the fearsome Locust dissolves. It’s not so much as a war now as it is a futile attempt to survive. Just don’t tell that to Marcus Fenix and the rest of his equally brutish gang though; as long as their chainsaws are still sharp enough to tear through Locust meat, they’ll be ready to pull the trigger.

And these guys have been through a lot. Here we’ll take a look at 8 of their most pulse-pounding moments in the series.

1) Kryll Carnage

The night has never been darker. Once the sun sets, these bat-like creatures emerge from whatever hell-cave they live in to form huge swarms that terrorize those in the dark. Stay in a place where no light shines, and like a homing missile they descend and tear you to pieces no sooner than you can say “hey, who turned off the lights?”

2) Chainsaw Lovin’

We’ve learned to fear chainsaws ever since movie psycho killers started using them as a murder weapon of choice. Gears of War gave us a reason to love them. Indeed, there are few things more satisfying than seeing Locust heads burst with a carefully placed headshot. One of those few things though is sneaking up on them and slicing them up from shoulder to hip.

3) Razorhail

As if normal hailstorms weren’t bad enough, Gears of War brought a different kind of hailstorm. The game nails the essence of what hail is in that it’s still hard, icy stuff falling from the sky. Only this time, that hard, icy stuff is sharper and pointier, like deadly, deadly knives. The better to impale us with, says the weather!

4) The Worm

It’s not often that we shudder in terror at the sight of worms. But when the worm in question is as huge as the Empire State Building, then yes sir, your shuddering is justified. Safe to say, that’s not a worm you can step on. You can however let it gobble you down, and if you’re lucky, you can go all the way to its heart, and end its life. At least that’s what Marcus Fenix and the gang did.
