Over the weekend, Warner Bros. Pictures finally unveiled the first official trailer for Justice League, DC's highly anticipated superhero ensemble.
Based on the teaser, Justice League has enough star and firepower to challenge Marvel's Avengers series, a franchise that has proven to be a goliath at the box-office. Those two and a half minutes of (almost) new footage has fanboys and fangirls everywhere wishing for an earlier release date.
The thing is, this level of enthusiasm can sometimes be a bad thing.
If you take a look at how Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice turned out, director Zack Snyder actually has a history of hyping his movies through mesmerizing trailers, only for the actual films to disappoint both audiences and critics. At this point, his reputation for mucking up comic book adaptations is well documented.
In the filmmaker's case, watching the trailer sometimes proves to be more worthwhile than seeing the movie itself. Ouch.
Snyder may have to go back to his Dawn of the Dead and 300 roots—striking an effective balance between solid pre-release promotion and effective storytelling for the movie in question. Who knows, holding back might even help him manage the expectations of moviegoers.
