First things first, this year’s Tomb Raider aka TR9, now out for the PS3, Xbox 360 and PC, is definitely hot, super gory deaths aside. This is Lara at her grittiest. Frail, untested, and completely stranded on an island infested with cult-ish figures not exactly known for nice tea parties, the young Lara embarks on a quest to survive, in the process revealing the challenges that shaped who she eventually became in the older games.
Speaking of these older games, Miss Croft has blown hot and cold throughout the years. Let’s see which installments are worth the hunt and which ones we’d be better off leaving six feet under.
Tomb Raider (1996)
The OG. If you consider yourself a fan of the series then there isn’t a reason to not pick this up. If you aren’t a fan, then do yourself a favor and play the game that spawned the action exploration genre. 1996 baby!
Tomb Raider II (1997)
Now that Lara’s polygonal bewbies were firmly in the minds of gamers everywhere, TRII rode the hype wave to commercial success. But was it better? Changes like human enemies and ponytail animation were derided but it wasn’t a bad follow-up overall. Also Lara in a diving suit: winning!
