What's the first thing that comes to your mind upon hearing the word "December"?

Christmas? 13th month pay? Your godchildren trooping to your house?

For local film buffs though, the last month of the year signals the annual Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).

Despite constantly breaking box-office records, the past few editions of the movie gala, according to pundits, had been underwhelming in terms of storyline ingenuity. Seriously, the MMFF wouldn't be complete without a campy fantasy adventure, a predictable romantic comedy, that godforsaken horror anthology, and the same group of people starring in those unoriginal plots every year.

Why can't we have fresh stories and innovative executions, like this one:

The indie rom-com sci-fi Saving Sally stars former 5 and Up host Enzo Marcos as the nerdy comic book artist Marty, who fancies his beautiful bestfriend, gadget inventor Sally, played by none other than FHM July 2016 covergirl Rhian Ramos.

The coming-of-age film, which according to director Avid Liongoren took a decade to make, features a mix of live-action and 2D animation to paint the picture of this unique tale of romance and adolescence.

Now, the people behind the visual masterpiece are lobbying for it to be included in this year's MMFF. If trite concepts and hackneyed actors have a place in such a prestigious exhibit, surely this breath of fresh air is more than qualified to be part of its final lineup.
