You may be wondering why Spider-Man has yet to share any screen time with the likes of Iron Man, Thor, and Captain America, despite being a Marvel character himself. He's a one-time member of The Avengers in the comics, after all.
Well, in a nutshell, that's because Spidey does not belong in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sony Pictures Entertainment owns the movie rights to the character, because Marvel sold it to them for a mere $7 million in 1999.
The deal spawned five Spider-Man movies in the years that followed, and while it made Sony tons of money, their recent material, admittedly, hasn't been that great. And after the critical failure of last year's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, fans had no choice but to ask for another revamp.
We just got word that Spidey is slated to make a Marvel comeback real soon! The Verge reports that a deal has been announced between Sony and Marvel that will see the web slinger appear in an as-yet-unspecified movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe sometime in 2016. Hurray!
If everything goes according to plan, the following may happen in the next few years:
- Spider-Man might make his first Marvel movie appearance in Captain America: Civil War next year.
- The next standalone Spider-Man movie, due in 2017, might also feature characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
- Spidey might have a role in The Avengers: Infinity War, which is the be-all and end-all of all superhero movies. We're possibly going to have to wait until 2020 though.

It's worth noting that Sony doesn't intend to give up the movie rights to the character. The agreement indicates that Sony will continue to finance, distribute, own, and have final creative control of the next Spider-Man film, but it will now be co-produced by Marvel's Kevin Feige, who worked on The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy, among others.
See what happens when studios do things for the sake of the greater good? Thank you, Sony and Marvel!
