Who: Jennifer Connelly, Keanu Reeves, Jaden Smith
What’s it about: Trust the outsiders—in this movie’s case, our alien friends—to tell us what really is going on. This is the premise of the remake of the sci-fi classic from 1951. Human-looking alien (played by Reeves), swings over to town and tells a renowned scientist (played by Connelly) of the impending doom the planet is facing. Unlike the original movie, which referred to the Cold War as the crisis, the current version highlights environmental issues and terrorism. Relevant much?
What’s good about it? While the current version is just as relevant in dealing with the current issues of their own respective times as the original, the visuals and vibe of the 2008 version are just a tad more real and natural than the 50s version.
What’s bad about it? Hardcore fans say it’s too tree hugger-y for its own good.
