The first trailer for the much awaited crossover film between Ju-On: The Grudge and The Ring just dropped—and we’re still trembling from all the horror. Called Sadako Versus Kayako, the film pits the two franchises’ demon protagonists against each other.
The whole trailer is in Japanese, but you don’t have to learn the language to understand what’s happening. The premise is really simple: Two women watched the famous cursed videotape of Sadako inside the house where Kayako is.
For those who haven’t seen The Grudge or The Ring yet, Sadako kills everyone who watches her cursed video tape, while Kayako haunts the house where she was killed. Now they face-off, chasing similar victims.
Both franchises launched Japanese horror into mainstream media in the late '90s and early '00s. It even got the attention of Hollywood, who made remakes (and sequels) of the films.
But, as they say, nothing beats the original. There’s something about "J-Horror" films that makes them exceptionally frightening. Instead of trying to frighten you, which Hollywood does through jump-scares and gore, they make you feel nervous and edgy, digging deep into your psyche. The masochist inside us hopes this tradition will live on in this crossover film.
Sadako Versus Kayako will be released in Japan on June 18. There's no word yet if it will be shown here.
