Universal Records
Two things about Sponge Cola are reflected in Transit. First, their emo influences. Songs like “Movie” and “Nocturne” remind the listener of emo bands like Dashboard Confessional—the guitars, the progressions, nano-second breaks between verse and the bagsakan chorus. Except, Sponge Cola missed out on the vocals, the single most important element of emo. Yael lacks the high-pitched whine. (Is that a good thing? Could well be…) Second, it seems the boys are learning the Pinoy pop song sensibility. It could be from their APO tribute experience, we aren’t quite sure, but songs like “Tuliro,” “Pasubali” and “Gunito” showcase this point. “The Wandering” attempts to be the big, mighty epic attempt. Transit appears to be the completion of a Sponge Cola sound, if the boys were ever to be boxed. And the boys—well, they sound unapologetic about it.
