It’s our favorite time of the year—that’s aside from Christmas and the FHM 100 Sexiest Victory Party; okay, it’s our THIRD favorite time of the year! But who’s counting, right? What’s more important is it’s now February. The love month. The okay-lang-magwaldas-para-sa-date month. The only month men are allowed to be ultra-cheesy.
But do you have any idea HOW to be cheesy? Are you and your girlfriend/missus constantly bickering about your lack of romance? Do you attribute your singlehood to your lack of wooing skills? Well, we’re going to solve these all for you! FHM will be dishing out daily how-to-be-a-Don-Romantiko tips the whole month of February!
Gentlemen, welcome to FHM’s 28 Days Of Romansahan!
DAY #7: LEARN HOW TO SERENADE WITH THE EXPERTS!
There's nothing you can do for the girl of your dreams that's more romantic than the harana. After all, not everyone has the guitar skills of Paul Gilbert or Joe Satriani. And we can damn well guarantee that not many guys can sing like James Ingram and Luther Vandross. Even lesser are the people who can strum and sing at the same time ala-John Mayer and Ely Buendia.
Simply put, it takes a special someone to actually pull it off.
Sure, the harana is a dying art. Mixed tapes (or CDs and playlists) can easily be made and shared. You can post mushy YouTube videos on her Facebook page with just a few clicks. However, any dude who has the guts to bare his soul in an all-out harana performance, no matter how out of tune he is, will get pogi points for sure.
If you want to give it a try, just pick up a guitar, learn a (good) song, and go for it. And because we’re such good wingmen, we’ll share with you a few pointers, courtesy of some of the greatest harana maestros to have ever lived: screen legends Dolphy, Panchito, Bossing, Miniong Villegas, and their ilk!
TIP #1: CHOOSE YOUR BACK-UP SINGER WISELY
First of all, it's not advisable to hire someone to sing for you. But as Babalu and Benjie Paras can attest to, if you truly need some back-up vocals, it pays to have someone who’s actually good.
TIP #2: CHOOSE YOUR GUITARIST WELL
It’s more acceptable to get a guitarist to accompany you than to get someone to sing for you. Hook up with a guitar expert and practice. Dolphy and Panchito did some of the best harana sequences in Pinoy cinema, but they couldn’t have done it without the great Miniong Villegas on their side.
