Gilas Pilipinas is about to embark on a mission 36 years in the making.

Our team will start off their FIBA World Cup campaign against Croatia, a tall squad that's ranked 16th best in the world. We expect each and every hoops-lovin' Pinoy to tune in, as well as say, nay, scream the one word that best represents our dear national basketball team: Puso!

Sure, we're all giddy about Gilas's upcoming World Cup stint, but we need to be realistic about something: The odds are stacked against us, bros! We're no longer facing our Asian rivals; this tournament has the very best national basketball teams on earth. We'll be going up against squads with stratospheric frontlines, numerous NBA players, and hot-shooting veterans who can give even the great Allan Caidic a run for his three-point money.

Simply put, no one's expecting us to go deep or even past the first round.

But we say forget about the odds! We may be the underdogs but that doesn't mean we don't have a chance in hell! And if we were part of the coaching staff, we'll try to inspire our men even more by telling them about the most epic Cinderella runs in sports history.

So what if we're the World Cup's smallest team? Who cares if everyone expects us to get trampled on? The critics, haters, and mirons don't matter. Just play Pinoy basketball, be proud, and show your #Puso on the court! Kaya yan, Gilas!

(P.S. Whatever happens, basta wag lang kayong papayag na matambakan ng 50 ulit ha :>)

The odds: In the middle of the 2012 season, the Kings head coach Terry Miller was dismissed and abruptly replaced by Darryl Sutter. The team rallied to make the Stanley Cup Playoffs, where they entered as the Western Conference's eight seed.

The run: Being the eight seed, nobody expected Los Angeles to go past the first round. But they did, beating first seed Vancouver, then going through second seed St. Louis and third seed Phoenix en route to the Stanley Cup Finals. They faced the New Jersey Devils in the title series, winning the prestigious Stanley Cup in six games.

#Puso feat: The Los Angeles Kings became the first eight-seeded team in NHL history to win the Stanley Cup. This was also the franchise's first championship.
