Following his historic first PBA basket, we think of other hoops highlights that will hog headlines if ever our Pambansang Kamao manages to pull them off.
"I think it's historic that congressman Manny Pacquiao scored in this game so we will be posterized forever," Yeng quipped in front of reporters after his team's 108-94 victory against the Mahindra Enforcers, wherein the Filipino boxing icon made his first-ever conversion in a PBA game.
The coach continued, "Nagalit ako kasi matagal ko nang pangarap 'yun eh. Naunahan ako sa pangarap ko... But if you leave him open he can really make shots."
Local sports media outlets immediately picked up on Manny's milestone and featured it as the news day's anchor—never mind that ROS actually won the game and improved to 2-0 in this year's Philippine Cup.
And, why not? Yeah, last season he scored his first official point in the PBA—but that was off a freethrow. We believe many of us still doubted he can actually make a legit field goal.
But here we are now and it has happened. So why not push things a little further, yes? We've come up with several other Pacquiao PBA basketball plays that will surely create a ton of media buzz once they happen.
Dream-like scenario: Once again against ROS, PacMan drives down the lane and is met by the Extra Rice. Inc. duo of Beau Belga and JR Quiñahan. 6'9" beanpole Raymond Almazan also helps out, but Manny is undeterred by the challenge and the contact—after years of resistance and strength training—and converts his first-ever layup in the pro league.
Magoo Marjon then erupts, "May kasama pang foul!"
Dream-like scenario: Aldrech Ramos collars an offensive board and looks to kick it out to KG Cañaleta. The latter though is triple-teamed by the Star Hotshots' Marc Pingris, James Yap, and Jerwin Gaco, so Ramos instead passes the ball to a wide-open Pacquiao. He makes them pay, much to the dismay of rookie coach Jason Webb.
Dream-like scenario: Ivan Johnson has returned to the Talk 'N Text Tropang Texters to help them defend their Commisioner's Cup crown. During their game against Mahindra, the volatile ex-NBA player makes the same mistake of taunting and bumping into coach Yeng, this time with Manny. A straight left to the import's face knocks Johnson out cold and has Pacquiao thrown out of the game.
Dream-like scenario: Barangay Ginebra San Miguel is up by one, with four-tenths (0.4) of a second left in the game clock. With the team's starters and majority of the reserves having fouled out, Manny pulls off an improbable catch-and-shoot and sinks the buzzer-beating perimeter jumper over the outstretched arms of Greg Slaughter and Japeth Aguilar. The crowd is stunned, and Mahindra wins 100-99.
FIRST DUNK (Just because we're going that far)
Dream-like scenario: Reigning PBA MVP June Mar Fajardo of the San Miguel Beermen tries to chase down a speeding Pacquiao on the break. Fajardo is able to get in front of Manny, but before he could even jump to block the shot, the pugilist-senator wannabe has already put him in an embarrassing poster. "The Kraken" has just been served.
We can all dream now, can we? And it's not as if these are all impossible. As his first-ever made basket in the PBA proved, we should never, ever doubt Manny.
