It's San Mig Coffee vs. Talk 'N Text in the PBA Commissioner's Cup 2014 Finals, folks! We all know it's gonna be a battle, but there are certain thing we're really hoping would happen...
And, just like that, PBA Finals na naman!
Last night, the San Mig Coffee Mixers bamboozled the Air21 Express in Game Five of their semifinals match-up, 99-83, winning the series 3-2. The reward: a Finals date with the undefeated red-hot scoring juggernaut that is the Talk ‘N Text Tropang Texters!
It will be a battle, especially with the Texters looking to exact sweet revenge over the Mixers.
You see, San Mig Coffee defeated Talk ‘N Text in the quarterfinals last conference, 2-1, ending the latter’s quest for a historic fourth-straight All-Filipino Cup crown. Ouch!
On the other hand, San Mig Coffee is also looking to make history. A series win will give them three consecutive championships since last year’s Governor’s Cup. Sure, it's only a “mini Grand Slam,” but it will still propel the former Purefoods franchise to the elite group of squads who have won at least three championships in a row, which, in the 29-year history of the PBA, only includes Great Taste, Alaska, San Miguel Beer, and Crispa.
And, of course, winning this series will also put San Mig Coffee closer to clinching the PBA's fifth Grand Slam season.
It's history vs. revenge: Kampihan na!
The exciting backstory is nice and all, but as basketball-crazy fans in a basketball-crazy land, it’s the on-court action that will have us screaming like pre-pubescent girls in a Justin Bieber concert. Game 1 is set for 8 p.m. tomorrow (May 9), folks!
Now, we all expect fireworks, but for this series to be truly memorable, several ball-tastic things need to happen! We list them all down for you below!
A JUSTIN MELTON DUNK
For the uninitiated, let us introduce you to Justin Melton:
“P$%@! Ang bangis!” Yes, indeed. Standing just five-foot-nine, J-Melt’s our version of Spud Webb and Nate Robinson: a short jumping dynamo that has crazy hops. He won the recent PBA Slam Dunk contest and he’s been slamming it home in games. When he pulls one off in the Finals, expect the Smart Araneta or MOA Arena to go bananas.
ALAPAG’S DAGGER THREES
Nothing like a ringless three-pointer to snuff the life out of a desperate uprising from the opposing team. Jimmy Alapag is definitely a master in this department (he’s a career 36-percent three-point shooter), and it almost feels like he likes to do it just when the other squad’s catching up. Jimmy Alapag: silencing boos and breaking hearts since 2003.
His next mission: share his 'superpower' to creative young artists
