When Mark Alexis Taguinod was diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease Stage 5 in 2012, it ruined the graduating student of Marine Engineering's dreams of becoming a seaman. It wasn't due to an unhealthy lifestyle or anything as it was a congenital (aka present from birth) condition, but the financial cost of dialysis weighed down on Mark, "Feeling ko naging pabigat nalang ako sa family ko dahil puro palabas lang ng pera sa hemodialysis ko."

Unable to take regular work because of his disease, he didn't give up and managed to turn his passion for Dota into a way to fund his treatment.

What kind of financial impact does your dialysis have?

Three times a week, lifetime–unless makapag pa-kidney transplant ka. Ang regular dialysis sa mga center is about P2000-2500, labas pa doon yung kailangan like dialyzers, injections. Since 2012 yanmay mga time na twice a week lang ako kasi nag titipid ng pang bayad sa dialysis center.

It's heavy indeed, when did you decide to start selling Dota items to support your needs?

Nagstart ako mag buy & sell mga 2014 or 2015 siguro.

Kaya parang win-win situation for me.

What a typical sales post looks like

What kind of money did you start the business with?

Nagsimula ako around P5000 capital ko. Tapos ngayon siguro pinakmalaking nahawakan kong iresell is around $4000 worth of items.

What's an average day of work bring in?

And you started from the cold, aside from being a Dota "adik?"

Yes, wala akong connections talaga.

Calculating that, your monthly income roughly evens out with your monthly medical fees?

Yep, ganun ngaPero start ng cashout sa dialysis center ko is August, kasi may Philhealth assistance na 90 sessions per year. Sa first 8 months of the year nakakaipon nadin ako ng pang gastos para hindi ako mag skip ng hemodialysis–mahirap pag nag-skip. Kasi dati 45 sessions lang ang assistance, until 2015 or 2016.

Items are listed in USD but don't follow the actual exchange rate?

Ang average price for reselling is P37-38 to a dollar, 40-43 during big events.

EZ $3000 in his inventory

Are your buyers just Pinoys? Do they go for P10,000 items?

[Buyers ng P10k items] Madami sila, madalas sila lumalabas pag may big LAN events.

So dropping P10k on Dota items is a regular thing for some buyers?

Yung value nila is for betting and yun ang pinaka-purpose ng reselling ko.

How do you convert your bettables into real money then?

Do you take part in betting yourself?

Minsan, sa teams na fan ako like Astralis or EG.

Do you treat it as full-time work? What's the endgame with your reselling?

And my long-term goal is kidney transplant funds.
