In the 90s, the arcades were a scene all its own.
If you were a cool kid, you would’ve been there. And you would’ve been setting all the high scores. And you would’ve been hustling, all while you ask your mom for more token money.
Now, arcades just don’t have that same vibe anymore. Probably because all the best games for the format have come and left. One of those games though, X-Men: The Arcade Game has been re-released for the Playstation 3 through the Playstation Network on December 14, 2010, and for the Xbox 360 through the Xbox Live Arcade on the 15th.
The game, a beat-em-up originally released by Konami in 1992 puts you in the knee-high boots of Wolverine, Cyclops, Dazzler, Storm, Nightcrawler and Colossus as you try to vanquish everyone’s favorite metal-attracting psycho, Magneto.
The gameplay is straightforward. You start a stage, enemies appear (mostly human-sized Sentinels), you beat them up, and you go right, and fight the end boss.
It sounds repetitive, and sometimes it can be, but for those who played it at the arcades way back when, it’s supremely nostalgic and fun. It’s good ol’ button-mashing fun at its finest, and possibly offers the most fun you’ll have playing as one of the X-Men.
