NBA 2K11's hype has been fulfilled. [firstpara]

It has been a week since the release of this year’s premiere basketball videogame (and probably most hyped as well), and the critics have spoken: This is probably the best basketball game in the history of sports gaming.

In fact, one gaming website,, went so far as to call it not just the best basketball game ever, but “the best sports game of this generation.”

With the Jordan Challenge modes where you get to replay 10 of Michael Jordan’s most memorable games, the smoother animations and graphics, the superb presentation, and the improved A.I., well, who are we to disagree?

Like Jordan in his prime, NBA 2K11 is the best at what it does, and what it does is best is to offer the most realistic basketball simulation we’ve ever seen.

Realism though might come at the expense of some players who are merely looking to pull a couple of crossover dribbles and just dunk on everyone the entire game. NBA 2K11 is easy enough to get into, but very hard to master.

Even in the lower difficulties, you have to play smart basketball to have a fair chance at consistently winning games. And like a rookie guard facing Kobe or a Wade, it could get overwhelming because learning to play smart basketball in 2K11 requires a bit of dedication. So if you’re new to the game, here are some tips to make you become a real 2K11 player.

Moving in Isomotion

First off, watch the video, learn the moves, and practice them in 2K11’s Practice Mode until you’re comfortable pulling them off from memory. NBA 2K11 offers a ton of moves from basic crossovers to the fanciest spin maneuvers, so understandably, it’s going to take a while for you to memorize them all down pat.

As you’ll soon find out, or as you have found out, using those moves in a real game as opposed to an empty practice gym is a whole new ballgame.

CPU defenders in this game are very good at staying in front of you, and merely spamming crossover moves will not work. The defenders will merely bump you, and the resulting contact will disrupt your motion, and you end up getting nowhere near the basket.

In order to be effective, you have to make efficient use of the space that the defender is giving you. Try driving hard to the lane he’s giving you, and as he tries to cover you, pull a crossover to the opposite direction.
