First-person shooter (FPS) games are a dime a dozen nowadays, and it’s a trend that Master Chief and the Halo series definitely played no small part in spreading.
The first game in the Halo series, Halo: Combat Evolved, for the original Xbox was revolutionary, and proved that FPS games can exist not just on the PC but on consoles as well.
Doom, Quake, Unreal, Half-life—these were all big names in the FPS arena, but all of these were deeply rooted in PC gaming. It was Halo that changed that, and made FPS games the surefire console hits that they are today.
Fast forward to 2010, and we now have Halo: Reach in our hands, which is a prequel to Halo: Combat Evolved.
This game for the Xbox 360 puts you in the space boots of Noble 6, a member of an elite supersoldier squad, doing battle against an alien race called the Covenant. All that space drama and laser gunfights will be taking place in a distant human colony called Reach in some galaxy far, far away (George Lucas, don’t sue us).
So far, that formula, along with Halo’s proven blockbuster potential, has made the game a hit. It raked in $200 million on launch day, and has also been a hit with the critics, garnering a sterling 92% rating in reviews aggregate site Metacritic.com.
Looks like Halo has hit the bull’s eye once again.
