We don’t know about you, but we’re already looking forward to summer and the out-of-town trips planned with family and friends throughout the hot months. It’s been a long, stressful, and tense 2017 so far; and that’s no alternative fact.
Since we can’t exactly file vacation leaves right now (February pa lang???), we’ll have to make do with low-budget tricks until that well-deserved break comes along. We think these eight Bluetooth speakers will be as eager to play our summer tunes as we are! Our apologies in advance to all within earshot, although we doubt you’ll actually complain. Any song requests?
Clip and dip
We’ve seen a lot of unique gadget designs throughout the years, but JBL’s Clip 2 may be the first Bluetooth loudspeaker we’ve seen that can literally go where you go. This small sound-maker can be clipped anywhere, from your swimwear to gear and post-swim lounge clothes. And you don’t have to worry about getting the Clip 2 wet: it’s waterproof with an IPX7 rating, so it’s as comfy offshore as on it. And like the aforementioned Onyx Mini Black, the Clip 2 also works as a speaker for calls, and can be connected to another Clip 2 unit for double the aural fun.
You can buy your own Clip 2 from JBL Philippines' official Lazada store for P2,799.
The compact and loud Onyx Mini Black speakers from harman/kardon provides enough reasons for you to ditch the earphones/headphones, and share your sounds with everyone else. It can also go for up to 10 hours between battery charges; and also acts as a mic and speaker for conference calls, thanks to its ability to cancel out echoes and noise. And if the output isn’t enough for you, you can connect the Onyx Mini Black with another harman/kardon speaker equipped with its Wireless Dual Sound tech for amplified sound.
Get this Bluetooth speaker from any of harman/kardon’s authorized dealers for P7,999.
For those who like their speakers blocky and front pocket-friendly, Creative has an attractive option for you. The Muvo Mini meets those criteria, and adds a 10-hour battery life, IP66-rated waterproofing, Bluetooth and NFC connectivity, and a second job as a phone speaker and mic. The tiny speakers also make use of two full-range micro drivers and a bass radiator for a fuller sound, and makes friends with analog sound devices with its 3.5mm auxiliary port.
The Creative Muvo Mini is available on its US website for US$59.99 minus shipping (around P3,000).
Extra size upgrade
From diminutive speakers, we move on to the biggest player on this list. The counterargument here is that if you're going to play your tunes loud and proud, the speakers have to match the attitude, right? Braven's BRV-XXL speakers doesn't just jack up its size and sound with four HD audio drivers and a subwoofer; it also enables equalizer changes, is protected from drops and spills, and has a 14-hour battery life. The boombox's 10-meter operating range is a bit of a letdown, but at least neighboring vacationers can also enjoy what you're playing. The more, the merrier!
The XXL can be yours for US$349.99 (around P17,400 minus shipping fees) via the Braven US website. You can also inquire with any of Braven's authorized Philippine retailers regarding price and availability.
Yeah, for speakers, we sure do like 'em small. But if the previous Bluetooth speakers on our list are all about having fun in the sun, the SoundLink Mini II from Bose is their regal, more serious sibling, watching over the proceedings from somewhere relatively high and dry. With a 10-hour battery life (seems to be standard for BT speakers), a 30-feet range, and sound quality that highlights all ranges including bass, this SoundLink is a suitable companion at home and on the road.
Eleksis Marketing sells the SoundLink Mini II for P13,000.
Back to the smalls
The Marshall brand is familiar even to casual music fans for their distinct-looking (and sounding) amps and speakers. But over the years, it has also produced smaller sound devices for the consumer market. Take the Stockwell portable speakers as a more recent example: this small, 1.20kg device has a look that recalls its roots; and it gives its all with two woofers and a two-channel Class D amp, along with adjustable levels for bass and treble. It can also be used for calls, and has an amazing 25-hour battery life. And if you connect your mobile device instead of hooking it up to the Stockwell via Bluetooth, your device would be juiced up as well.
Those sold on the Stockwell can get their own (with a Flipcover) on the Marshall US website for US$249 (around P12,400 minus shipping fees). If you prefer to buy locally, official distro Digits Trading has the Stockwell in stock (hah) for P13,450.
Ready to roll
Ultimate Ears' Roll 2 Bluetooth speakers is hell bent on being part of the action. Not only is this half-pound loudmouth made to be as rugged and (IPX7) water-loving as you; but it can be strapped to anyone and anything with its bungee cord (one-upping the JBL Clip 2's carabiner), and it can float around in the pool with you with its free inflatable floater. The nine-hour battery life is one shorter than its competitors, but its whopping 30-meter or 100-feet playing range makes up for it.
The Roll 2 is available now at the UE website for US$99.99 minus shipping (around P5,000), and comes in five colorful styles.
Mud, snow and water might have its way with other devices, but not with the Fugoo Go wireless speakers. This one tells them (along with dust and shock) to go on their merry way as you indulge in your favorite outdoor activities. You also get 360? sound when the speaker's facing up, and you can pair it with another Go speaker for louder output. Lastly, this rugged beauty's 10-hour battery life is enough to get you through a long day at the beach or in the mountains.
The Go can be purchased on the Fugoo website for US$99.99 (around P5,000 minus shipping fees).
